Has anyone here ever had a fever brought on by a Gout attack? I have gout now very painfully in my toe and ankle with a fever.
I've never run a fever with any of my more serious attacks but it's not uncommon, even accompanied by chills. It is after all a full blown immune system stimulation just like you would get with a bacterial infection.
Probably the attacks with fever indicate an even stronger attack.
Be careful though, don't try to treat the fever with aspirin, it is likely to make the attack worse.
Have you thought of colchicine to stop the attack?
I might have some somewhere from the last attack I had 2 years ago. Would you guys recommend I talk to my doctor and if he says yes, to go ahead with it? We have a good out of hours service here so maybe able to get a quick answer.
That said, they maybe out of date even if I do find them.
I have only been using Ibuprofen so far..
I experienced raised temperature and chills during my attack in August of 09. I layed on the couch with two blankets over me and the chills passed but my temperature was raised for a few days. At the time, I was only taking Naproxen for pain relief and hadn’t yet found this site.
I had my first gout attack 10 years back with fever and chills, which lasted couple of days. I took Ibuprofen for fever and pain.
My second gout attack was this year but no fever or chill this time.

I think your old colchicine is still perfecly active. I've had an old bottle for 10 years more stay at full strength. (Having us toss our old drugs is just a ploy to increase Pharma sales…USUALLY. Some drugs, like nitrates for heart relaxation, are VERY fragile, but not many.)
If you don't have 16 pills, which is the maximum for a bad attack, then ask your doctor to give you a new Rx.
Well, I struggled to the Doctors today as they wouldn't come out to me, have to say though, they did send me a free taxi there and back, so I can't complain.
The DR wasn't sure that fever would have come from Gout, but checked my lungs and ears etc for infection and found nothing.
He suggested I take Colchicine and checked the pot I had of it, and said that was fine. What I thought was sensible is that he gave me a prescription for Antiobiotics but told me to hold off on them until perhaps the gout had cleared up. If my fever was still there, then take the Antibiotics.
I am to take the Colchicine (2 first off, then 1 every 6 hours to avoid too many visits to the toilet), so i'll see how that goes.
Thanks for the advice on the maximum amount, I have lost the leaflet so didn't know that.
If the pain does go away now, how long should I carry on taking it, stop immediately, or 1 or 2 after?

The general rule is to stop when the pain stops or serious diarrhea begins but I might be tempted to take one or two extra for “insurance”
if I hadn't yet reached 16.I have had several gout attacks, foot, knee, and elbow, and usually they are accompanied by a mild fever. Until now I could never find anything on the web where someone else had the same experience. Right now I am suffering from a gout attack in my ankle that has lasted several weeks. Drinking lots of water – taking Vitamin C, (??), and going out today to get some Aleve to see if that helps since I ran out of Ibuprofen.
It took me ages to realise that persistent headaches were assocoated with gout, as I used to suffer them anyway when much younger [and migraine too]. I suspect this is a similar reaction to the fever mentioned where the immune system is being triggered but itdoesn't really know by what as there is no infection, as such.
On the Vit C and Aleve, my personal opinion is that neither are ideal- as Vit C supports immune system and will make reactions worse at a critical time and Aleve, though of minimal side effects compared to many pain killers, is aspirin based.
My pref. is for CoCodamol effervescent tabs, but used lightly and not for more than a few days in a session, as Codeine can be addictive.
Colchicine is the boyo- but it takes time to work!

I doubt that very much trev. They are chemically as different as night and day. Do you have a reference?
You're right Zip- 'Aspirin like' with the same blood thinning and stomach irritating properties as aspirin but not including it.

Trev, your LSD is getting to you. (No offense!) Just google Apirin and Naproxen and see for yourself.
