Hello everyone!? I've been experiencing some strange symptoms lately and I'm hoping that someone can provide me their thoughts on the situation.? Anything would be appreciated! Now I know that gout is primarily experienced by men, but I am really wondering if that's what's going on with me.? I'm a 32 yr old female and have had arthritis type symptoms for the past 6 months or so.? I was tested for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus a few weeks ago and those were negative.? About 3 weeks ago I began having pain in the little toe on my right foot.? At first I thought it was possibly the shoes that I had worn, but as the pain got worse I suspected that maybe I had broken my toe.? The pain would wake me up in the middle of the night, and I would end up not being able to go back to bed.? 2 nights ago the pain was so excrutiating that I finally decided that I needed to see a doctor.? I had an appt yesterday, and the doctor immediately said the toe was broken and would confirm it with an xray.? Well, the xray didn't show a broken toe.? The doctor was stunned when he looked at the xray and the only thing that he saw was an extremely swollen joint.? He said he suspects gout, and they drew blood to check the uric acid levels.? I will hopefully get those results on Monday.? What really concerns me is that gout in young women is associated with renal failure.? I have had many issues with my kidneys, and was told about 10 yrs ago that I had scar tissue on my kidneys.? My question for the good people in this forum is, does this sound like gout?? And if so, are there any other reasons that may cause gout in a premenopausal woman?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!? And if you have any questions about my situation I would be happy to answer them.? Thanks everyone!

Hi there.. I've spoken to 30 yr old women [also teetotal] with gout- it does happen.

Good to test SUA ?[figure?], without it – all in the dark, esp. without a bunion [big toe] flare at some stage, like you have avoided>

I've had attacks in lesser toes- after an initiating one in the larger joint occurred previously.

I have scarred kidney and still have good GFR [last check]. Needs keeping track of though.

Try not to worry over much- your Doc seems on the case and you can get good follow up support here ,if gout [or even psuedo gout].

Both are?incredibly painful, yes- but can be managed OK – if properly addressed.

    missy,

    ?

Odds are? against gout because of your age, sex, etc. but then the odds are against being run over by a bus on vacation?in Belguim are slight but I know someone who was.

    ?

If you have the screaming bunion the diagnosis is easier but other foot pains not so easy.

Wait on your serum uric acid. Shame he didn't stick a syringe into the toe and suck out some joint fluid. Finding crystals is the most defining test for gout.

    ?

My guess is that you will have to wait through a couple more attacks before beginning long term meds.

    ?

In the good old days, I'd say get a prescription for colchine and see if it has a dramatic effect but Big Pharma in collusion with the FDA has made that route problemmatical for many of us.

Trev and Zip thank you for your replies! Even though I've seen the doctor and he's run the appropriate tests, I'm still worried, but that's pretty normal for me!? I tend to worry about everything!? I have decided to try and call the other doctor that I saw about a month ago and see if they drew uric acid levels when they did my blood work.? Based on that, and the results that I will hopefully get tomorrow, maybe my doc and I will have some sort of idea of what's going on.? Thanks again you guys!? I appreciate the words of encouragement and support!? I'll update you when I get all the results in!

    missy,

although I am not a female, I had similar issues starting in my early/mid 30's.? everyone swore I had RA, but it took almost 9 years to discover I had gout.

    ?

no family history, i was thin, did not eat/drink, etc.? so it can happen.

    ?

just thank someone that soon you will know your uric acid levels…which will go a long way.

    ?

As suggested, this is the first step…but at least you will begin to have answers soon.
